Understanding Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)

In Massachusetts, Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) is a program designed to provide paid time off for eligible employees for family or medical reasons. This program is separate from any benefits your employer might offer and is funded through employer and employee contributions. Here’s what you need to know about PFML:

Who’s Eligible for PFML?

Most Massachusetts employees are covered by PFML if they have met the minimum earnings requirement established annually by the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) during the last four completed calendar quarters. Self-employed individuals may also opt in through MassTaxConnect.

Qualifying Reasons for Paid Leave

You can take up to 26 weeks of combined family and medical leave per benefit year for various qualifying reasons, including:

  • Caring for your own serious health condition
  • Caring for a family member with a serious health condition
  • Bonding with a new child
  • Caring for a family member who was injured serving in the armed forces
  • Managing affairs while a family member is on active duty

Your benefits payment is based on your individual average weekly wage, the state average weekly wage for Massachusetts workers, your benefit year, and the type of leave you are taking. In 2023, the maximum weekly benefit is $1,129.82, and in 2024, it is $1,149.90. Your leave may also be affected by other benefits programs such as unemployment or workers’ compensation.

You can apply for paid leave starting 60 days before your leave would actually start. It’s recommended to notify your employer at least 30 days ahead of time. However, if you need to take leave suddenly, you can apply for retroactive leave. Keep in mind that certain conditions apply, such as applying within 90 days of your leave beginning and not receiving other forms of wage replacement during your leave.

The Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave program provides important benefits for employees needing time off for various reasons. By understanding the program’s eligibility criteria, qualifying reasons, and benefits, you can make informed decisions about utilizing this important resource.
