Bruce and Kris Jenner have separated, could file for divorce

As we all know by now -- and in exhaustive detail -- the words "divorce" and "Kardashian" go hand in hand. The divorce of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries dominated headlines for months; and even after their 2011 split was finalized earlier this year, there was still plenty of space on the front page of gossip columns to use for their divorce.

However, these two words -- "divorce" and "Kardashian" -- are coming up again as Kim Kardashian's mother and stepfather are separating after more than 20 years of marriage.

Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian's mom, and her husband Bruce Jenner (the famous U.S. Olympian) have been living apart for many months now, but formally acknowledged their separation recently. They have not formally filed for divorce yet, but that could happen in the coming months. Kris and Bruce share a $125 million fortune as a result of the television series "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and the resulting fame it gave the family. However, there are rumors that the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement.

This could prove quite costly. Without a prenup in place to clearly define who gets what in a divorce, basic state laws that govern the division of assets in a divorce will be used (unless the parties can settle out of court). That could mean that one or both spouses could end up with less than they expected should their hypothetical divorce be completed.

Another aspect to this separation is that Bruce Jenner may have leverage over Kris if he requested alimony. This is because he gave up his motivational speaking career and, really, any career in general to take care of the kids he and Kris had.
