What is income for Child Support purposes?

Generally speaking, according to the child support guidelines, income is defined as, “gross
income from whatever source, regardless of whether that income is recognized by the IRS or
reported to the IRS or the state Department of Revenue or other taxing authority.” The
guidelines, however, do not consider means-tested public assistance programs as income to either
parent. Means-tested public assistance programs includes TAFDC, SNAP, veterans’ benefits and
SSI benefits; as such any money received as a result of these benefits will not be included as
“income” for child support purposes.

Besides normal wages, income does include bonuses, overtime, tips, non disability social security
payments, military allowances and allotments, insurance benefits (including disability and
personal injury benefits), workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, spousal support
received from another party, consistent in kind compensation received, lottery or gambling
winnings, prizes or awards, and any other form of income or compensation received by the parties.
